A BASE Where You Can See, Make and Learn About Uranium Glass
The mysterious uranium glass glows a pale green when exposed to ultraviolet light. The fantastical atmosphere drew me in. They actually have workshops where you can make glass using uranium, so I joined one. I was able to make my own glassware with ease thanks to the attentive and supportive staff. Try making glass yourself and for sure, you'll become attached to that glass.

Coffee Stand Fukujuyu
Okayama Tsuyama
A BASE Where You Can Chat With Locals Over Coffee
The owner, who is from the area, revived this former public bathhouse and turned it into a café. It seems that he started it as a place for local people to relax. The "koi-yaki," named after the landlocked Tsuyama, is the perfect accompaniment to coffee.

Nakayama-jinja Shrine
Okayama Tsuyama
A BASE Where You Can Reexamine Yourself and Feel Your Burden Being Lifted
The main shrine, designated as a national important cultural property, exudes a distinct kind of beauty coming from well-aged wood that sets it apart from other shrines. If you look at the main shrine from the side, and not just the front, you'll surely be surprised by its size. I was enveloped in a state of calm in the quiet and solemn grounds.

A BASE to Take a Deep Breath While Viewing a Beautiful Landscape and Recharge Your Batteries
This observatory is halfway up Mt. Kannabi, located south of Tsuyama City. Looking at the mountains and townscape, I felt my heart calm down and naturally breathe deeper. Free telescopes are available, so it's also fun to look for Tsuyama's famous spots like Tsuyama Castle, the old Tsuyama fan-shaped locomotive depot, and more.
