Although there are over 3,000 lighthouses in Japan, only 16 can be climbed. One is the Shionomisaki Lighthouse. Climb the 68 steps on a steep spiral staircase and the Pacific Ocean is right below! The height may be a bit unnerving, but with nothing to obstruct the horizon, one can feel that the town of Kushimoto is jutting out into the Pacific.

Is This Really Japan!? A BASE to Feel as if Traveling in the Tropics
The lookout point is located about a kilometer on a hiking trail from the start of the Kanayama trail. It is a scenic viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of Kushimoto with the added bonus of a fun walk to get there. There is a sense of adventure hiking through a dense tunnel of lush trees like a tropical forest, over ferns on the ground and spotting black kite through the trees.

This cake shop is located in Yoshun Elementary School, which closed in 2011. The playground equipment and cherry blossom trees in the schoolyard made me feel as if I traveled back in time to elementary school. As I opened a classroom door, I was greeted with the sight of numerous cakes with a wide variety of seasonal fruit! I couldn't help but smile when tasting the wonderful flavors.

The owner goes around the fishing port and fish markets every day to procure fresh fish, so the menu changes daily.
